(TOI), Times of India’s Literary Carnival From December 2 to 4 at Mehboob Studio Mumbai
As the name suggests, Times of India’s Literary Carnival will not be a regular literary festival, but a literary carnival. Events at the “Mumbai Fully Booked, The Times of India’s Literary Carnival” include:
- Panel Discussion / Debates about Mumbai City, Movies, Sports, Food, Pakistan, Money, Business, Religion, Disability and whole list of topics
- Book Launches
- Interactive Events and Workshops
- Entertainment Performances
With over 70 speakers and participants expect lively and stimulating conversation and debate.

Sports Celebrities at The Times of India’s Literary Carnival
- Abhinav Bindra: India’s Olympic gold medalist. He won India’s first Olympic gold since 1980. In October, Abhinav Bindra released his autobiography, “A Shot At History”, which was co-authored by Rohit Brijnath.
- Rohit Brijnath: Veteran Indian sports journalist who has recently co-authored Abhinav Bindra autobiography.
- Leander Paes: Indian tennis ace who is also an Olympic gold medalist. Leander Paes will make his movie debut in the action thriller “Rajdhani Express”.
- Saurav Ganguly: Former Indian cricketer who can be credited for laying the foundation of the current renaissance in Indian cricket. Under Saurav Ganguly’s leadership India won 11 test matches abroad. The magnitude of this achievement becomes obvious when we consider that prior to that India had only won 13 matches abroad.
- Boria Majumdar: He is a sport commentator. Boria Majumdar is the author of “Twenty-two yards to freedom”.

Movie Celebrities at The Times of India’s Literary Carnival
- Mira Nair: Probably the most famous (and talented) Hollywood moviemaker of Indian origin. Her body of work is truly amazing.
- Sooni Taraporewala: Screen writer, movie director, and photographer. She has collaborated with her fellow Harvard buddy, Mira Nair, on Salaam Bombay, Mississippi Masala and The Namesake. She made her directorial debut with “Little Zizou”.
- Jaideep Sahni: Screenwriter, producer and songwriter who has worked on Khosla Ka Ghosla, Chak De – India, Bunty Aur Babli, Company, Aaja Nachle, etc. He has a contract with Yash Raj Films.
- Akshat Varma: He is the immensely talented scriptwriter of the Indie hit “Delhi Belly”. In addition to writing the script for Delhi Belly, Akshat Varma was also the Assistant Director of the movie. This California educated movie maker has now settled for a movie career in Mumbai.
- Zoya Akhtar: Producer, writer and director who, with the success of “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”, has completely come out of the shadow of her famous father (Javed Akhtar), mother (Honey Irani) and brother (Farhan Akhtar). Zoya made her directorial debut with “Luck By Chance”.
- Ayan Mukherjee: 28 year old Ayan Mukherjee won the Filmfare award for “Best Debutante Director” for “Wake Up Sid”. He has movies in his genes. His father is the Bengali actor Deb Mukherjee, his uncle is actor Joy Mukherjee, his aunt is Tanuja, and Kajol, Tanisha and Rani are Ayan Mukherjee’s cousins. He is also Ashutosh Gowariker’s brother-in-law.
- Vikramaditya Motwane: This immense talented writer used to be an assistant to Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He has written the script for Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, Dev D. Vikramaditya made a promising debut with the critically acclaimed 2010 movie, Udaan.
- Prasoon Joshi: Ad man, lyricist and screenwriter who had published books even before he was 17 years of age. He has won Filmfare awards for best lyricist for Fanaa and Taare Zameen Par.
- Gulzar: Padma Bhushan awardee, Gulzar, is the Indian equivalent of the British Poet Laureate. Gulzar is a poet, lyricist, scriptwriter and director. Last year he won an Oscar and a Grammy for Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionaire).
- Swanand Kirkire: Multi talented Swanand is a lyricist, playback singer, dialogue writer music director and actor. His songs “Bande Me Tha Dum – Vande Mataram” (Lage Raho Munna Bhai) and “Behti Hawaa Sa Tha Who” (3 Idiots) have won the National Film Award for Best Lyrics.
- Anurag Kashyap: Anurag is arguably the most famous present day Indie/Alternative movie maker in India. His experimentation and movie subjects are hard hitting. Ever new movie is eagerly anticipated. Anurag wears multiple hats – director, writer, producer and actor.
- Kareena Kapoor: Born to Indian movie royalty, in a short career of 11 years, Kareena Kapoor has won 6 Filmfare awards (Refugee, Chameli, Dev, Omkara, Jab We Met and We Are Family).

Indian Writers at The Times of India’s Literary Carnival
- Gyan Prakash: He is the editor of Caravan. Gyan Prakash is the Dayton-Stockton Professor of History at Princeton University. His works include “Bonded Histories” and “Another Reason”. His novel “Mumbai Fables” is based on Mumbai.
- Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghavi: Mumbai born Siddharth won the 2004 Betty Trask Award for his debut novel “The Last Song of Dusk”. He novel “The Lost Flamingoes of Bombay” was on the Man Asian Prize shortlist for 2009. His other works include “For Pepper & Christ” and “Hello, Darling”.
- Ashwin Sanghi: This Mumbai born alumni from Cathedral, Xavier’s and Yale has written a thriller, “The Rozabal Line”, under the pseudonym Shawn Haigins. His second novel, “Chanakya’s Chant” is based on the life of Chanakya.
- Amish Tripathi: Amish is a Mumbai born ex-banker who graduated from IIM Calcutta. He is famous for his bestselling “Shiva Trilogy”, of which “The Immortals of Meluha” was the first part.
- Chetan Bhagat:Here is another ex-banker who graduated from the IIMs. In 2010, Chetan Bhagat made it to the Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People”. Chetan has 5 novels of which 2 have been made into movies (Five Point Someone – 3 Idiots and One Night @ the Call Center – Hello).
- Sudhir Kakar: 73 year old Dr Sudhir Kakar writes on psychoanalysis. In his books he has presented an analysis of Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna. Sudhir Kakar has sixteen works of non-fiction and four works of fiction to his name.
- Shobhaa De: Columinist, novelist and socialite, Shobhaa has 17 books to her credit. Many of her books are best sellers.
- Shashi Tharoor: Shashi Tharoor is the Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram. This career diplomat, used to be the Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations. Tharoor has 6 non-fiction and 4 fiction books to his name.
- Jug Suraiya: This funny man is an author and columnist. In addition to books on humour, jug Suraiya has also written travel books.
- Rashmi Bansal: Rashmi is an IIM (A) alumni who is a writer, editor and lecturer at various colleges. She has written three books – Stay Hungry Stay Foolish, Connect the Dots and I Have a Dream. She also writes a blog called Youth Curry.
- Nina Godiwala: An MBA from Wharton, Nina had worked for organizations such J&J and Morgan Stanley, before starting Mindworks. Her book “Suits: A Woman on Wall Street” received good reviews from NYT, USA Today and Fortune. Nina Godiwalla is a recognized expert on leadership, diversity and women in the business world.

- Altaf Tyrewala: Even though Altaf Tyrewala’s book, “No God in Sight”, is only 161 pages, it leaves a strong impression.

- Naresh Fernandes: Journalist who edits “Time Out”. He has contributed to the photo book on Mumbai, titled “Bombay Then, Mumbai Now”. Naresh also writes on Jazz and is writing on the influence of Jazz on Hindi cinema.
