- As on 15 September, 2013, the total usable water in Mumbai’s 7 lakes was 1,207,160 million liters. This is more or less similar to the lake levels at this time of the year in 2012.
- Mumbai’s 7 lakes have a total usable water quantity of 1,454,700 million litres.
- Bhatsa Lake is the Most Important Lake for Mumbai since it supplies over 40% of Mumbai’s lake water. Although Bhatsa Lake has a total capacity of around 942,000 million litres, not all of it is for Mumbai.
- Middle Vaitarna Lake is Mumbai’s Second Most Important Lake. A 50 meter road bridge across the Middle Vaitarna Dam has just been completed by the PWD. With the completion of the road, BMC will start filling the Middle Vaitarna Dam; but since it is late in the monsoon season, this dam may not fill to its full capacity. The PWD road is 2 years behind schedule.
- Mumbai’s Monsoon season has started 1-2 days ahead of schedule. Rains in Mumbai in June and July, 2013 were higher than average, but below average in August.
- In 2012, rains started late and water levels in Mumbai’s 7 lakes were very low in June and July, 2012. BMC had imposed a 10% reduction in water supplied to Mumbai until mid September. Late rains in August and September of 2012 helped fill up Mumbai’s lakes.
- Of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai, only Vihar and Tulsi Lakes are within Mumbai. This link has information on Mumbai’s Lakes.

- On an average, Mumbai receives 2,200 mm of rains a year during the Monsoon season.
- Apart from 1971, this year’s June month rainfall level has been been the highest in 50 years.
- The wettest date in the 2013 Mumbai Monsoon season was on 10 June, 2013. Colaba received 91 mm and Santacruz received 181 mm of rain on that day.
- Mumbai’s monsoon season has started well; though a little ahead of schedule.
- The first two weeks saw heavy rains, followed by a lull in the monsoon. Week from the 19 July to 25 July saw the highest weekly rainfall in 2013.
