Main reason for visiting Hanging Garden Mumbai and Kamla Nehru Park is the Beautiful, Panoramic view of South Mumbai. There is a Viewing Gallery which offers stunning views of Chowpatty, Marine Drive and Mumbai Harbour.
Things To Do And See at Hanging Garden, Kamla Nehru Park
Hanging Garden Mumbai and Kamla Nehru Park are two gardens on the top of Malabar Hill in South Mumbai. These two gardens are on the opposite side of the road. There is a three storied Viewing Gallery adjoining Kamla Nehru Park. The Viewing Gallery has a wonderful view of South Mumbai and “Queen’s Necklace”.
The main reason for visiting Hanging Gardens and Kamla Nehru Park are the beautiful view from the top of the hill and the chance to spend relaxing time among Tropical Trees and green vegetation.
Malabar Hill Viewing Gallery – View Of South Mumbai
The “Pramod Navalkar Viewing Gallery” is next to Kamala Nehru Park and opposite the West Gate of Hanging Garden. This three storied viewing gallery offers beautiful views of South Mumbai.
Visitors can view Mumbai’s Queen’s Necklace, which is the necklace shaped area from Nariman Point to Marine Drive to Chowpatty Beach to the Governor’s Residence at Walkeshwar.
The old Naaz restaurant has been converted into the Malabar Hill viewing gallery. This observatory has binoculars for viewing.
Kamala Nehru Park Mumbai: Things to Do and Information
Kamala Nehru Park has a viewing deck that has a spectacular view of South Mumbai. Chowpatty and Marine Drive look stunning. Looking down from this height it makes sense why the “U” shaped Marine Drive is called “Queen’s Necklace”.
Kamla Nehru Park has an iconic two storied Boot House. Children under 10 can climb up the spiral staircase to the top.
There is a play area for kids to enjoy themselves.
Kamla Nehru Park has a small amphitheater, unfortunately not many events are held here.
Kamala Nehru Park has many species of Indian and exotic trees such as Banyan, Pepal, Cannonball tree, Palms, etc. Near the amphitheater is a massive tree whose trunk is around 20 feet in circumference. There is also a section for Bonsai trees.
Kamala Nehru Park underwent renovation in mid 2018.
Hanging Garden Mumbai: Things to Do and Information
Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens in South Mumbai is better known as “Hanging Gardens”.
Hanging Gardens Mumbai is built on a water reservoir; hence the name “Hanging Gardens”. This water reservoir supplies water to South Mumbai. It used to be an open reservoir on which the British built a garden in 1881.
Hanging Garden Mumbai is popular with the locals because of the walking/jogging track along its periphery.
Mumbai Hanging Garden Gardeners have created animal figures from hedges around the park. Kids will have fun identifying these animals.
Sadly there are not many public toilets in Mumbai, especially for women. Hanging Garden has toilets for women.
Tourist Attractions Near Hanging Garden Mumbai
BABULNATH TEMPLE AND ISKCON TEMPLE: There are two walking paths from outside Kamla Nehru Park that go downhill to the bottom of Malabar Hill. The north path ends at the entrance to Babulnath Temple. Across the main road is the Girgaon Chowpatty ISKCON Temple.
Babulnath Mandir (Temple) is a charming Lord Shiva Temple located on a hill.
ISKCON Mandir (Temple) Girgaon is a beautiful Hindu Temple with exquisite stone carvings. There is also a Jain temple in the next lane.

MALABAR HILL, LITTLE GIBBS ROAD: Malabar Hill is one of the poshest localities in Mumbai. Old wealth lives in this mainly residential area. Little Gibbs road is near Hanging Garden. It has a quaint Anglican Church called “All Saints Church”.
PRIYADARSHANI PARK (PDP): Priyadarshani Park is a garden-cum-sports complex on the edge of the Arabian Sea. It has an Astroturf running track, sports facilities (tennis, gym, football, etc) and a walking track. There is a walking path on the west of Hanging Garden that leads to PDP.
BABU AMICHAND PANALAL JAIN TEMPLE: Located a kilometer south of Hanging Garden is an exquisite Jain Temple. Babu Amichand Panalal Jain Temple has beautiful carvings, statues and paintings, especially the zodiac painted on the ceiling. Entry to this Jain Temple is open to all people of all faiths.
FOREST OF DOONGERWADI TOWER OF SILENCE: To the north of Hanging Garden Mumbai is the forest of Doongerwadi Tower of Silence. This is the final resting place of Parsees, who are Indian followers of the Zoroastrian faith. There are three towers of silence where the cleaned dead body is exposed to the sun and scavenger birds. This Parsi practice is called “Dokhma” or “Dakhma”. Tourists are not allowed here and entry to non-Parsees is restricted.
Tips for Visitors to Hanging Garden and Kamla Nehru Park
- Although both gardens have a lot of shade, it can get hot. Avoid going between 11:00 am to 3:30 pm.
- The day weather in Mumbai is usually hot and humid. Expect to sweat a lot.
- Stay hydrated. Drink bottled water.
- Wear comfortable clothes, preferably made of natural fabric like cotton or linen. Expect to walk around, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Wear a hat to protect against the sun. Apply sun block. Wear shades/goggles.
- Since Kamla Nehru Park and Hanging Garden are part of the Mumbai tourist circuit, expect to see many tourists on holidays.
- There are two paths that lead down to the lovely Chowpatty Beach. Do visit Chowpatty Beach with its lovely golden sand.
Hanging Garden and Kamla Nehru Park Timing, Entry Fee
Kamla Nehru Park and Hanging Garden Mumbai open at 5:00 am and close at 9:00 pm.
Entry to both parks is free.
