Mumbai Marathon 2013 Results – Men


Jackson Kiprop, of Uganda, won the Mumbai Marathon 2013 in a new record time.


  • Winner: Jackson Kiprop of Uganda won the Mumbai Marathon 2013 with a course breaking time of 2:09:30. In addition to winning USD $40,000 for standing first, he also gets an additional USD  $7,500 for breaking the Mumbai Marathon record (previous best 2:09:54).

  • Incredibly, this is Jackson Kiprop’s first professional marathon race. He entered the race as a pace maker to gain marathon experience; BUT eventually ended up winning the 2013 Mumbai Marathon with a record time.

  • Jackson Kiprop has been training with Uganda’s first Olympic Gold medalist, Stephen Kiprotich, the 2012 London Olympic Marathon winner. Kiprop has trained at high altitudes at Kaptagat in Kenya.

  • Until 5 kms till the end of the marathon, the leader back included Jackson Kiprop (Uganda), Abraham Girma (Ethiopia), Elijhah Kemboi (Kenya), Jacob Cheshari (Ethiopia) and Laban Moiben (Kenya & Mumbai Marathon 2012 winner). That’s when Jackson Kiprop and Jacob Cheshari broke off from the leader pack. At one point Jacob Cheshari took the lead, but Kiprop romped home 11 seconds ahead of Cheshari.

  • In addition to USD $ 20,000 for coming second, Jacob Cheshari also gets USD $7,500 for breaking the course record.

Mumbai Marathon 2013 Results – Women


Valentina Kipketer is the Winner of the Mumbai Marathon 2013 Women Race. She created a new course record.


  • Winner: Valentina Kipketer of Kenya won the 2013 Mumbai Marathon with a course record time of 2.24.35She smashed the old Mumbai Marathon women’s record 2:26:12 by an amazing 1:37 minutes. In addition to USD$ 40,000, Kipketer will also get USD $15,000 for breaking the Mumbai course record. 

  • Valentina Kipketer has been running long distance professional races since 2011, including 6km races and half marathons. Valentina Kipketer ran her first Full Marathon at the 2012 Hamburg Marathon where she stood fifth with a time of 2:28:02. The 2013 Mumbai Marathon is her second Marathon race.

  • What makes the 20 year Valentina Kipketer a star to watch out for the future is that she is confident that she can clock a below 2:22:00 time in a full marathon. The women’s marathon world record is 2:15:25 by Paula Radcliffe of UK at the 2003 London Marathon.

Key Runners at Mumbai Marathon 2013


2013 had a strong field of male contenders, many of whose personal best marathon timing was faster than the Mumbai Marathon course record of 2:09:54. The eventual winner, Uganda’s Jackson Kiprop, broke the course record. Favorites for the Mumbai Marathon 2013 in the Men category were:

Haile Gebrselassie is the International Event Ambassador of the 2013 Mumbai Marathon.Haile Gebrselassie, the legendary long distance runner from Ethiopia, is regarded as one of the greatest distance runners in history. Haile Gebrselassie is the International Event Ambassador of the 10th Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, 2013.


In his running career, Haile Gebrselassie ran distances from 800 meters onwards. He was particularly good at the 10,000 meters where he won two Olympic gold medals (1996, 2000) and four World Championships. In his illustrious career, Haile Gebrselassie set 27 world records.


Haile Gebrselassie started running marathons in the later part of his running career. Starting 2006, Haile Gebrselassie won 4 consecutive Berlin Marathons, breaking his own marathon world record (2:03:59) in the 2008 Berlin Marathon. He has also won 3 consecutive Dubai Marathons.


Haile Gebrselassie has acted in the Walt Disney film, Endurance, which is based on his life.


 





 


John Abraham is the Event Ambassador of the 2013 Mumbai Marathon.John Abraham is the Event Ambassador of the 10th Mumbai Marathon 2013. John has been associated with the Bombay Marathon since 2008.


Many celebrities from the film industry, business and Mumbai’s social set, raise money and awareness for their chosen charities and NGOs. In the first 9 editions of the Mumbai Marathon, Rs 710.7 million has been raised. Organizers expect that this year Rs 175 million will be raised for Charity (compared to Rs 160.7 million in 2012). 232 NGOs are involved with the Bombay Marathon.


Famous participants at the Mumbai Marathon include Anil Ambani, Rahul Bose, Milind Soman.


Standard Chartered Bank is the lead sponsor. The Indian Navy, Government of Maharashtra and the Athletics Federation of India also support the 2013 Mumbai Marathon.

Mumbai Marathon 2013 Prize Money: For both Men and Women winners of the 2013 Mumbai Marathon, the prize money is USD 40,000, second place is USD 20,000 and third place is USD 15,000. First placed Indian Man and Woman at the Mumbai Marathon 2013 will get Rs 4,50,000, second will get 4,00,000, third will get 3,00,000, fourth will get 2,50,000 and fifth will get 1,75,000. In case the Mumbai Marathon course record is broken, there is an additional jackpot of USD 15,000 and Rs 1,00,000 if the Indian record is broken. The Half Marathon at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2013 is for amateurs. Participants should have taken part in a Half Marathon in the last 2 years.

There are no separate prizes for Indian runners; although there are cash prizes for Veteran (Male 45+, Female 40+), Senior Veteran (Male 55+, Female 50+) and Super Veteran (Male 65+, Female 60+) Half Marathon winners.


 



 


Mumbai Marathon 2013 Dream Run


Route Map for the 10th Mumbai Marathon Dream Run on Jan 20, 2013.The Dream Run is a great opportunity for residents to participate in the Bombay Marathon. The 6km “Dream Run” has participation from regular citizens and corporate entities (in teams of 15 and 25). Individuals and companies can raise money for Charities and NGOs under categories such as “Dream Champion”, “Dream Wizard”, “Dream Maker”, “Team 25” and “Team 15”. Individuals and companies can also pledge money to charity. Kids, as young as 12 years, can participate in this event.

Route Map for Champions With Disability Run at the 2013 Mumbai Marathon.“Champions with Disability” is open for participants with physical disabilities, visual disorder, hearing problems, intellectual impairment and neurological problems. Children above the age of 12 can participate. An attendant can accompany the participant.

International Marathon Runners at 2013 Mumbai Marathon


All the Top 3 Male Winners of the 2012 Mumbai Marathon (Laban Moiben, Raji Assefa and John Kyalo Kyui) will participate in the 2013 Mumbai Marathon. In 2012, Kenyan Laban Moiben and Ethiopian Raji Assefa had both clocked in at 2:10:48, and it was a photo finish. This year too, expect fierce competition among these runners.


Raji Assefa is the favorite to win the Mumbai Marathon 2013. Raji Assefa stood second at the 2012 Paris Marathon with a fast 2:06.24. This is 3:30 minutes faster than the Mumbai Marathon record of 2:09:54 set in 2011. What adds to the excitement is that there is an additional bonus of USD 15,000 for the winner who breaks the course record. All the top three runners have bettered this time in 2012. Laban Moiben’s best time in 2012 was 2:09.13. There is a strong possibility of a new course record at the 2013 Mumbai Marathon.


40 year old South African Hendrick Ramaala, who won the first Mumbai Marathon in 2004, will also participate in this year’s marathon.


 


Indian Participants at the Bombay Marathon 2013


The Indian contingent at the 2013 Mumbai Marathon will be led by the winner among Indian runners at last year’s marathon, Ram Singh Yadav (2:16.59). Ram Yadav was 12th overall at the 2012 Bombay Marathon. Other Indian Men Mumbai Marathon participants include Elam Singh (runner up in 2012), K.C. Ramu, Lyngkhoi Bining, Ashish Singh, Angad Kumar and Sanaton Singh.


Last year’s Indian women runner Lalita Babbar will also be participating along with Kiran Tiwari (2012 runner up), Bhagwati, Shastri Devi, M Sudha and Anisa Devi.


The main Indian participants at the Mumbai Half Marathon 2013 include Soji Mathew (last year’s winner), Man Singh, VL Dangi, D Yunus, Kheta Ram, Budha Ram and Laxman Singh. The Indian women participants for the Half Marathon include Monica Athare, Kavita Raut, Sudha Singh, Anuradha Singh, and Priyanka Singh Patel.

Total Number of Participants at the 2013 Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon: 38,427 (in 2012 there were 38,775 runners). By comparison, the 2012 Delhi Half Marathon had 31,746 runners.

To ensure a safe marathon, there will be 350 doctors, 2 medical stations and 8 ambulances on standby. There will be 24 water stations, 8 energy drink stations, 11 orange and cool sponge stations. Mumbai Police will deploy 1,950 policemen and private security firms will provide an additional 1,000 people.
